Who We Are

We are a community of people committed to celebrating the glory of God through lives transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are deeply humbled by Christ's work for us and overwhelmed by His continued pursuit of us. As for us, we are poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for us. (Psalm 40:17)

Why We Exist

We exist to glorify God by treasuring Jesus Christ above all things. We exist to spread a passion for Godward worship by the proclamation and application of the gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the ways to achieve this is to provide rich, gospel-centered resources that both inform and excite our adoration of Christ.

Leadership Staff

I was born in Westminster, CA in 1978 and was raised in Orange County along with my two younger sisters by our mom. We attended Sunday school as kids and went to midweek studies pretty regularly and I believe I was saved when I was about 8 years old. As I got a little older, school, sports and life in general became a distraction and I drifted from the Lord. In 1995 I attended an outreach with my family and was so convicted by the Holy Spirit that I responded to the invitation to go forward after the message. Unfortunately, I made the same mistake that many believers do- I didn’t pursue my relationship with Jesus by finding a church to plug in to and be discipled. Temptation got the better of me and I lived my teens and early 20’s in rebellion to God. I struggled with all of the things that plague many young men-alcohol, lust and anger-to name a few.

By God’s grace and mercy, I met my wife Lina in 2001 and we were married just under a year later. We failed to find peace in our marriage for the first year and knew that only God could show us how to love each other the way He intended. We began to look for a church home and tried many places before we found Brave Heart in 2007. Since surrendering my life to Christ, He has set me free from the bondage of sin, and has given me as He promises, “life more abundantly” (John 10:10). I believe that God guided every step of my life and has even used the things I experienced while living in rebellion for His good purpose (Prov. 16:9, Romans 8:28).

I am so amazed at the Lord’s grace in allowing me an opportunity to serve at Roots Community Church. There is no doubt that He chooses to use the foolish and weak things to show Himself wise and mighty (1 Cor. 1:25-27)!

I was born and raised in Southern California where I spent most of my younger years growing up in the small town of Yucca Valley. After high school I moved to Orange County to pursue a college degree. My mom, who raised us kids, introduced me to Christ at a young age but unfortunately as life progressed I found myself beginning to shift my attention from creator to creation. Because of this shift I’ve learned my share of tough lessons along the way. Today I live with the realization that it is by God’s grace alone that I stand redeemed and forgiven.

I finished school and have enjoyed serving at Roots Community Church along side my wife. My wife and I share the same passion for the gospel and enjoy telling others about the grace we have received. It is the love of Christ that compels us. (2 Corinthians 5:14)

I was born in Los Angeles and have lived throughout Southern California, finally settling in Orange County with my family in 1995. Having lived a half century, I have the benefit of seeing a fair amount of my life in hindsight, and I can say with the utmost confidence, that God is faithful! He is faithful in saving me from my sin through the redemption found in Jesus alone, and in saving me to a life more abundant than I can ever have imagined. He has been faithful in my marriage to my wife Maria (aka Inday), showing me that I need His gospel and power to love her and my kids His way. And He has been faithful to bring me to serve alongside you at Roots.

I genuinely enjoy gathering in a lifegroup setting, seeking application of the living word while building one another up and simply doing life together; I always look forward to gathering early the first day of the week in prayer and fellowship as we setup for worship; and I'm eager to reach out to our community in various ways being His witnesses. I'm excited as we walk and grow together in His grace, being transformed into the image of Jesus for our joy and for His glory!

I was born and raised in the Central Valley, where I grew up among a tightly knit family and group of friends who all played important roles in pointing me to Christ. Although I committed my life to Christ at the age of six, I experienced the Spirit gradually working in my heart over time before gaining a deeper and fuller grasp of the Gospel. After graduating high school, I moved to LA to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Art and minors in Biblical Studies and Business at Biola University. During my time in college, God flipped my world upside down and opened my eyes to see His radical calling for my life as a follower of Christ. I was compelled to live, not for selfish gain, but for JESUS and to use my passions and gifts to be a light and witness to the surrounding world. By God’s grace, I also met my husband during these years, and God united our dreams and desires to pursue a life on mission for Christ.

Alex and I have been attending Roots since September 2014. Since then, we have grown immensely and been so encouraged to see the Spirit at work in our church body. Today, I am living out my life-long passions as a high school cross country and track coach and children’s art teacher. As Kids Ministry Director, I am excited to see how the Lord continues to grow and shape our little ones through our Kids Ministry. I pray that we can continue to cultivate a desire in our kids to know and love our Savior and understand our need for Him!

My story begins in Southern California where I was born and raised until age eleven. At that point in my life, my parents (who were missionaries) moved our family to southwestern Pennsylvania to pursue a ministry opportunity in the rural area of Fredericktown. After four years of serving at a small church there, we moved back to Orange County where I completed high school and then attended the Calvary Chapel School of Worship. During my time at School of Worship, I studied the Bible and music more intentionally than I ever had before, and the Lord created in me the desire to lead worship. After graduating from School of Worship, I enrolled as a full-time college student at OCC. I am currently studying mathematics with hope of becoming a high school math teacher after completing my education.

Roots became my home church in the Spring of 2015 (while I attended School of Worship), and I started leading worship in the Spring of 2016. Since then, the Lord has continued to grow in me a passion to display His love and grace through the songs we sing together every Sunday morning, knowing that worship does not end there. By the mercy of God, we present our bodies as living sacrifices, which is our spiritual worship (Romans 12:1).

What excites me most about being the worship leader at Roots is the opportunity to arrange the songs we sing and lead the voice of our church in corporate worship. Singing the gospel every Sunday morning with my church family is an honor and a blessing.

Some Illumination on Worship

Some time ago we announced that we’d be leaving the lights on from now on during worship on Sunday mornings. In that initial announcement Dylan hit the main points as to why we’ve made this decision but here’s a bit more detail… The Lord’s Day gathering has been likened to a dress rehearsal for heaven,

On Baby Dedications…

When I look around at the season we’re in as a church, I am blown away by the kindness and nearness of our Lord. One of the ways the Lord has shown His kindness to us is with a new wave of babies! Oh how we love babies! In His tender mercy God has allowed
